Two of these paintings outline the harbor and the 3rd painting is of the Bailey Lighthouse, looking over Dublin Bay. Howth is an excellent place to go to and is a pleasant small escape for anybody passing time in Dublin Town. Situated just nine miles from the town centre, it takes about twenty-five min to get to by Dart (Dublin’s electrical rail system). You can also get a bus to Howth Peak where the perspectives across Dublin bay are astounding. On a clear day you can see as far south as Wexford and looking east you can make out the mountains of Wales. From here you can see the Bailey Lighthouse and its view across Dublin Bay to the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains.
Our painting of the Bailey Lighthouse was painted not far away from the peak where the cliff walk begins. I might highly counsel, for anybody visiting Howth for the 1st time, to make their way to the peak on the 31C bus. The last time I took this route it took me around 45mins to an hour. It is an ideal way to guide up to dinner time because by the point you get down to the village you’ll have built up a hefty appetite and potentially a ferocious thirst. There are plenty of restaurants and bars. Here are my favorites, with a short outline. My favorite day to go to here is a Sun. afternoon when they usually have a roaring fire in winter time often.
The bar on the top floor has a pleasant terrace with perspectives over Howth Harbor and beyond to the Island of Ireland’s Eye. If you’d like to eat something more serious the Wheelhouse cafe upstairs is a good selection. This is a favorite for plenty of visitors passing thru. There’s typically a normal music session happening. For any one searching for non-pub related activities there’s lots to do in Howth. If you like golfing, Deerpark Hotel has two 18-hole public golfing courses on its grounds, as well as a par three course. So far as public golfing courses go, you cannot improve than this on a fine day. On the drive up to the golfing courses, you can stop off at the old castle and visit the Transport Museum. A favorite for lots of folk on a bright afternoon is to take an hour or 2, get a ninety nine (ice cream) just ramble round the harbor. There’s lots of activity to observe and the seals routinely make an appearance. Our two paintings of the harbor and the lighthouse in the background are favorites of neighbors and visitors alike.
